PSS adds new blueprint and poster printing capabilities

Printing Shipping and Signs is pleased to announce acquisition of a new HP DesignJet T2530 blueprint and large-format scanning and printing machine. In addition to producing high-quality prints in black & white, PSS now has the capability of printing in color. Not only will this apply to architectural and engineering documents, but the machine now offers a way of printing posters for clients, freeing up our Roland large-format printer for larger banner and signage projects. You may still submit your files for printing to us in PDF format, and the shop is thrilled that the capability to scan blueprints and other technical drawings to PDF is now in place, which is an important feature not previously available to clients.

If you have questions, feel free to send a message to, call at 816-532-5010, or stop into the shop!

A note about keeping your print project on track!

Proper file preparation prevents headaches on both ends of the job process!

Proper file preparation prevents headaches on both ends of the job process!

We always strive to provide a quick turnaround for our customers. There are a number of things that you can do, as the customer, to keep your job from being delayed; these are a few of the issues I’ve dealt with in recent weeks in pre-production.

1. Timely approval of proofs. The turn time on your job does not start until we receive approval back from you. We will give you an anticipated timeframe in which you can expect to receive your proof; please keep checking your email during this time and get back to us with either approval or any needed changes as soon as possible.

2. Print-ready files that are truly print-ready. If you are doing the layout or design on your job, please do us a favor and download my guide to preparing your file for print here. I recommend HIGHLY against sending Word documents; there are simply too many versions floating around and your project may end up with a formatting issue. A good alternative is to submit your document as a PDF. If you are working in a graphics program such as Illustrator or Photoshop, PLEASE (and I can’t stress this enough), outline your fonts. If you are using InDesign, package your file so the fonts are included. We have a lot of different fonts here, but if we don’t have yours, your file will default to a system font and will not look as you intended it to look. And finally, if you need a project printed at a certain size, please save it as that size! I’ve spent a lot of time recently resizing customer files, trying to locate fonts, and dealing with other pre-press issues that take a lot of time. Not only do we have to charge a setup fee when your job isn’t set up correctly, since we’re spending our time adapting it, it also eats up a LOT of time. If the file were to arrive ready to go, we probably would have already had it printed. This is perhaps the number one issue that we have to adjust deadlines backwards from what we originally told the client; opening the file and finding nasty surprises.

We have set turn times for all projects that are detailed on our job ticket, downloadable here. Keep in mind that these turn times are based on either a) jobs that we are laying out in our shop, or b) jobs that are sent truly print ready. If we have to make a lot of adjustments to customer files, these turn times can and do extend especially during times of high workload. Ensuring that your file is truly ready to go when you send it will ensure that we can turn your job quickly, which is of course what we all want!

New client tools coming! Plus a note about turn time and rush fees

New client tools coming! Plus a note about turn time and rush fees

Greetings! We hope everyone had a FABULOUS Labor Day weekend (we sure did!) Now that it’s time to get back to work, we wanted to forward some news about some website updates coming your way, and discuss a mundane but important topic: how long will it take for you to complete my job?

First, our website. We will be creating expanded information to help clients prepare jobs for printing, including print specs and file setup FAQs. We’ll be adding these slowly over the next couple of weeks – so for those of you designing your own jobs, or even sending photographs to be used on jobs, these documents will not only help you prepare your file for proper printing, but explain why a certain photograph or logo may reproduce wonderfully while another is of poor quality.

Secondly…that dreaded topic – deadlines and rush fees. Depending on job, our turn times usually vary between 2-4 days, with a few custom printing jobs taking a bit longer than that. Some projects simply require a certain amount of time; for instance, a lot of our printed vinyl must dry for 24 hours before being applied to a substrate such as coroplast or metal; there’s just no getting around this. With our website update, we’ll be introducing a section detailing turn times for each type of job we specialize in printing, and a tiered rush fee system for clients needing jobs prior to that published turn time. Our business has steadily grown over the past year, and we’re pleased to report that our printers are usually completely scheduled for a workday 2-3 days in advance. If a client needs a job the next day, someone else’s job must be bumped to accommodate that rush job. Which means the client that was bumped may not get their project when anticipated. Our rush fees will be tiered depending upon need-by date; for instance, on a job that has a published turn time of 3 days, if that job is needed within 2 days the rush fee is a certain percentage, and if it’s needed next day it is another, increased, percentage.

Again, these turn times will be published on this site, communicated to clients who send us jobs, and reiterated on proofs sent to clients. We anticipate rolling out this system two weeks from today, which is Monday, September 15th. As our job list continues to grow with each passing month (on any given day, we now have 30-40 different jobs active in our system, many of which require multiple items), we are going to have to evolve to handle the increased workload. We will be happy to work with you on a tight deadline, but if we have to bump already-scheduled jobs to complete a rush job, we simply have to create a system for it.

We pride ourselves on very quick turn times compared to other print shops in the area, and we also pride ourselves on our incredibly competitive pricing! We look forward to working with you on your next project and unveiling our expanded website with multiple new customer tools and tiered pricing.

Since any blog update is worthless without pictures, below is a recent job we did for Burton’s Bait and Tackle in Smithville, MO – a window perf job for their front door, to help block the morning sun (and add some added marketing for the business!). Our website update will include a gallery section to show off the various types of work we do for clients!

PSS’ Sarah Dickerson speaks to Smithville Chamber about making the most of marketing

SDchamberPrinting and Shipping Solutions co-owner Sarah Dickerson was the featured speaker at the Smithville Chamber of Commerce during their July meeting. Sarah spoke about not only tips for designing great print materials, but how to get the most for your money when it comes to advertising, marketing and print media.

Not only did Sarah provide the local business owners with great tips and examples of how to design and deliver a great message but she also provided tips on how they could save money by properly planning a design project. Sarah also explained the importance of “branding” and how to make the best use of photos and images in printed materials.

PSS now offers LED updgrades for business signs

Printing and Shipping Solutions is proud to announce that they are now offering LED lighting in all of their lit sign packages. If you are looking into new business signage, the new LED lights will save you literally thousands of dollars in energy and repair bills. PSS is also assisting current sign owners who have the older traditional style lighting systems in refurbishing their signs and upgrading to the new LED lights.

PSSLEDThere are a number of reasons the new LED lighting systems are beneficial to business owners. The number one reason is long life. LED bulbs and diodes have an outstanding operational life time expectation of up to 100.000 hours. This is 11 years of continuous operation, or 22 years of 50% operation. If you leave on the LED fixture for 8h per day it would take around 20 years before you’d have to replace the LED bulb.

LED’s are different to standard lighting: They don’t really burn out and stop working like a standard light, moreover the lighting diodes emit lower output levels over a very long period of time and become less bright.

With traditional incandescent light bulbs which operate at 20% energy efficiency only, a 80% of the electricity is lost as heat. Imagine the following scenario:

If you use traditional lighting and have an electricity bill of $100, then $80 of that money has been used to heat the room, not to light it! Using LED illumination with 80% efficiency, the electricity costs would be around $20 and you have saved around $80.

Because the long life span of LED lights, also the maintenance work – think of all the work and energy it would take to purchase, stock and change the conventional light bulbs of an airport – you’ll see that you can make significant energy savings also when it comes to maintenance and replacement due to the long operational life times of LED lighting.

Many business owners are making the switch to LED and if you are interested in brighter, more energy efficient LED lighting for your business signs, contact Printing and Shipping Solutions at 816-532-5010.

Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign

Everywhere you look, signs are directing you where to go and how to get there. Whether you are promoting a your business or providing information, signs continue to be one of the best ways to get your information seen.

Business signs and advertising signs are one of the most efficient and effective means of communication. Signs help people find you; they reach people who are passing by your establishment; they present an image of your business. In short, signs, tell people who you are and what you are selling.

Signs are such a powerful communication medium that it is difficult to estimate the extent of their influence. Other media require the directed attention of the person receiving the message. Signs, however, can convey a message while creating a mood or feeling of atmosphere. It is not necessary for people to give full attention to your sign in order to derive meaning from its presence.

Printing and Shipping Solutions takes great pride in being able to provide signage from small yard signs to large business signs and everything in between.

Whether you are looking for a small sign to promote your small business or a large sign to place above your business door, Printing and Shipping Solutions is your one stop shop for signage. Call us today at 816-532-5010 or visit our website at
